Abuja: AD meeting ends in fracas, police arrest 2 NWC members

  • AD urges members to remain claim, says matter is being addressed
Crisis rocking Alliance for Democracy (AD) assumed different dimension on Wednesday in Abuja as an emergency National Working Committee (NWC) meeting‎ of the party got disrupted, leading to the arrest of two high-ranking members of the party.
The arrested NWC members are the National Legal Adviser, Barrister Kehinde Aworele and the National Organizing Secretary, Abdallah Ibrahim.
National chairman of the party, Joseph Avazi, had called for the meeting atPinecrest Hotel to address party issues.

It, however, got disrupted and the officers arrested by the police.

‎National publicity secretary of the party, Olayinka Nola confirmed the fracas to the Nigerian Tribune.

She said that trouble started when the National Legal Adviser, Aworele, raised a motion that the meeting was illegal as the party’s constitutional procedure to call for a NWC meeting was not followed and no agenda was attached to the invitation.

She said in his motion, Aworele, also stated that some people who were not members of the NWC were invited to the meeting and demanded to know on what capacity they were invited to the emergency meeting.

Aworele’s motion was seconded by the National Organizing Secretary, Ibrahim, she said.

According to her, there was commotion following the motion, which made the National Auditor, Ayodele Ishmail to invite the police on the instruction of the national chairman of the party.

The police officers who were invited subsequently arrested Aworele and Ibrahim.

Nigerian Tribune confirmed that they were still in police custody at Police Divisional Headquarters, Lagos Street, Garki 11, as at the time of this report.

She said, “Following the arrest and detention of the two principal officers of the party, the meeting was disrupted.”

Nola went further to say that, “The party had scheduled a National Executive Committee meeting on 3rdNovember 2016, which is usually preceded by a National Working Committee meeting.

“Majority of NWC members did not see the need for an emergency meeting a few days to the scheduled meetings.

“AD urges members to remain claim as the matter is being addressed.”
