ABU Sex Scandal: FCCPC commends authorities over disciplinary measures

Consumer protection agency, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), has commended the decision of the authorities of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), over its decision to terminate the employment of some staff of the institution on offences bordering on corruption and sexual harassment, while reiterating its commitment to protecting the rights of students, as consumers.

The authorities of the university had not too long ago, announced the dismissal of fifteen of the university’s staff and demotion of an academic staff, after the affected staff were found guilty of gross misconduct by the university.

Describing the action taken by the university as ‘bold’ and ‘decisive’, the agency’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Babatunde Irukera, in a statement issued, noted that the ‘inappropriate’ behaviour of the university’s staff undermines the quality and validity of education, and questions the credibility of educational outcomes.

Irukera further expressed the Commission’s delight that the university’s authorities would be going the whole hog, by beaming their investigation searchlight to others, within the community, who might have been involving themselves in this type of behaviour.

The FCCPC’s boss, however, expressed the Commission’s commitment to protect the rights of students, as consumers, and also keep the nation’s educational space safe and secure.

“A transparent, fair and just educational community is vital for all members of the community, especially students, and the Commission is keen to ensure that students, as consumers, are afforded the necessary protection, and our campuses are safe and secure always,” he added.
