ABSG warns of Abians on current heatwave

Abia State Government, through the Department of Climate Change in the Ministry of Environment and Urban Renewal, hereby expresses great concern about the recent changes in climate, resulting in heatwaves being experienced day and night.

According to Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, the Commissioner for Environment, “The adverse effects of the current situation range from dehydration, which can lead to fainting, contracting chickenpox, heat rashes, and mental stress. Also associated with heatwaves are skin cancer, meningitis, and, in the worst-case scenario, death.”

The Government recalls that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had advised on how to prepare for changes in climatic conditions.

The Abia State Government, therefore, advises Nde Abia and residents to adhere to the recommendations by the experts to curb the threats associated with the heatwaves.

Ogbonna stated, “These recommendations include drinking more water and staying hydrated, avoiding excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages and caffeinated drinks, reducing the intake of foods rich in proteins as they increase metabolic activities. Fresh foods and fruits are better alternatives. It is also advisable to stay indoors between 12 noon and 4:30 pm, take a cold bath before going to bed at night, and monitor blood pressure regularly.”
