The absence of viable opposition

Published by

A viable opposition is essential in policing the government in power, to ensure that the dividends of democracy get to the people.

The Second Republic (1979-1983) witnessed a viable opposition when the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) was a thorn in the flesh of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).

I  remember that when there were signs of economic meltdown and other serious issues, Awo would call a world press conference to address the issues and suggest solutions. Since 1999, there has been no viable opposition  to checkmate the government in power.

If the members of the opposition parties are not defecting to the ruling party, they are protesting against the trial of their members for corruption. No party is giving the government better options for national prosperity. Then, how can the opposition convince the voters to vote them into power again?
