The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Sunday, decried the state of facilities at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, describing it as deplorable.
Abiodun, accompanied by his wife, Bamidele, and the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Peter Adefuye, on a facility tour of the state-owned hospital, said the visit was informed following his meeting with heads of different sectors in the State Ministry of Health.
The governor said he received a disheartening report about the hospital from the health officials, hence the need to pay an on-the-spot assessment to the health facility.
Governor Abiodun said a team would be constituted to look into how the hospital could be functional, as soon as he receives a formal report from the CMD.
He added that the hospital had lost its pride of place as the best University Teaching Hospital in the country, and also the hospital that produced the best medical doctors some years back.
The governor said, “I am sure that you followed me round and you have seen for yourself the condition of this place. It is worse than deplorable and I intend to immediately put together a team of both consultants and members of the sector, as soon as I receive a formal report from the medical director and his team.
“I would set up a team to immediately begin how to look at that approach that would make this place be functional as it should be. I don’t see how this place can produce doctors that would able to look after patients. I don’t see how they even look after patients with their current state.

“So, we have to go back to the drawing board. I understand that they have lost a lot of accreditation which is not surprising based on what we see here. Most of the buildings that are here are buildings that were inherited from the old general hospital.
“This place is sub-standard, I am going to sit down and look at how best this place would start working perfectly. We also have to look at the Public Private Partnership (PPP) and ensure that all these are working.
“This hospital at a point in time was the best teaching hospital in this country, and the Faculty of Medicine was number one in the country. But, today we lost accreditation and I have imagined that this is what should have been fundamental and primary to any administrator. We are going to look at how we get all these back before we think of anything.”
