Abia civil service reform will enhance governance, administrative efficiency -Otti’s Aide

Published by

Governor Alex Otti last week inaugurated the Abia State Civil Service Reform Committee with a charge for the committee to work with the goal of  achieving the vision of the present administration in the area of civil service, with Dr. Chibueze Ukaegbu as the Chairman of the Committee

However, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Due Process, Dr. Oluebube A. Chukwu, says by this move, Gov. Alex Otti-led’s administration is in a significant move towards improving governance and enhancing administrative efficiency.

Speaking with select newsmen in Umuahia weekend, Chukwu said, “This assembly of experienced professionals underscores the seriousness with which the committee’s mandate is being pursued”.

This newly established committee, he also said, has been entrusted with the pivotal task of reviewing the existing civil service structure and Command Promotions carried out from 2007 to the present day, alongside other essential recommendations.

According to him. “Governor Otti’s decision to establish this committee stems from the recognition of the crucial role that a well-functioning civil service plays in translating government policies into actionable outcomes”.

The committee has been assigned the responsibility to scrutinize the current appointment, promotion, and dismissal processes, with the objective of refining and optimizing these procedures. Furthermore, it is tasked with examining and addressing concerns related to pensioners, attendance, and overall discipline within the civil service.

Chukwu noted that his office “strongly supports this initiative as this step aligns closely with Due Process procedures in government”.

Due Process, he said, “is a fundamental principle that ensures fair, transparent, and accountable decision-making within government activities, and the Governor’s action demonstrates a commitment to following Due Process by taking deliberate steps to review and enhance the efficiency of the civil service.

He highlighted the areas of action to include “Transparency and Accountability, Fair and Equitable Review, Inclusivity, and Participation, Consideration of Recommendations and Non-Discriminatory Approach” to civil service issues.

“These principles collectively contribute to the promotion of good governance, accountability, and effective decision-making within the government’s efforts to reform the state’s civil service”, he concludes.

Inaugurating the committee at the cabinet office, Umuahia, the State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti said he expects the committee to work closely with the Office of the  Head of Service to get useful information to make the work easier.

He assured that all necessary information would be provided by the Office of the Head of Service, pointing out that the overall aim is to create a civil service that would work.

He urged them to discharge their duties excellently, adding that setting up of the committee was not made against any individual but to create a better service that would be for the benefit of all.
