Following the abduction of three students from Joseph Sarwuan University in Makurdi, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the university has raised concerns about the growing insecurity on campus.
According to Comrade Paul Anyagh, the ASUU chairman for the JOSTUN chapter, there have been several kidnapping incidents involving both students and faculty members.
This information was shared in a statement issued on Wednesday by the ASUU chairman and made available to journalists in Makurdi.
Comrade Anyagh stated that the recent abduction of three students on Tuesday night highlights the inadequate security measures at the university.
He cited numerous past instances of kidnappings involving students and lecturers on campus and expressed that the union is increasingly uncertain about the safety of its members.
He said, “With what has happened, the union is not sure that its members will be safe on campus given that this incident is one too many.
“In the past, a member of our union was kidnapped at the University staff quarters, although he was later released, it went to show the porous security nature of our campus.
“Also, we have had cases of kidnap of students in the past on our campus, and given this circumstance, the union is no longer sure of the security of her members for the discharge of their legitimate duties.
Comrade Anyagh who called for improvement of the security architecture on campus also called for the immediate rescue of the three students who were kidnapped on Tuesday.
“The union called for the immediate and safe rescue of the three students that were kidnapped on Tuesday, 25th February, 2025. This will ensure stability on campus for smooth academic activities.
“The improvement of the security architecture on campus to ensure safe environment for teaching and learning
“The union is standing in solidarity with our students and parents and do hope for the safe release of the abducted students soonest,” the statement read in parts.
