‘She abandoned me for 7yrs and returned with another man’s child’

The Oja Oba/Mapo Grade C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has dissolved the 15-year-old union between Oluwole Okeyode and his wife, Kafayat Okeyode.

The petitioner, Oluwole, had dragged his wife to court, seeking for a divorce on the grounds   that she was promiscuous and troublesome. He also added that her words were cheap.

“The greatest mistake I ever made in life was marrying my wife, “Oluwole told the court.

“My marriage to her  brought me pain, distress and embarrassment, all because she’s a whore.

“My wife has made herself cheap by sleeping around like a dog.

“My ears were full of her escapades, but I never believed them until I caught her deep in the act with one of her lovers.

“A fight ensued between us and this created a rift in our relationship. I actually lost trust and confidence in her since then.

“Her parents mediated in the matter, but she failed to change.

“She later walked out on our marriage and abandoned me for seven years. During this period, she went  back full force into her adulterous business and had a child for another man.

“After much plea from her parents, I took her in with this child, thinking she has changed, but I was  proved wrong.

“Our relationship became worse than it was before she left.

“We start the day cursing each other and end it with a fight.

“My wife is a pathological  liar; if she says ‘good morning’, you had better verify to be sure  it’s not late in the night.

“The last time we fought, she  hit me on the head with a  plank. I sustained  serious injury and was hospitalised for some weeks. She left home again for another four months, Oluwole told  the court.

“If I continue to habour her under my roof, she will kill me. I’m also tired of a woman who sleeps around like a dog.  I, therefore, pray the court to please separate us and give me the custody of our two children because she’s not an example of a good mother. I don’t want our children to toe her footsteps.

Kafayat, while responding, glossed over the allegation of infidelity leveled against her, but prayed the court not to dissolve their marriage because her husband was in possession of her property. She further pleaded with the court not to grant her husband the custody of their children.

“The documents of my piece of land are in my husband’s possession and he has vowed not to release them. Because  he said I am owing him some amount of money which is a lie.

“I also can’t leave my children with him because he cares less about their welfare, she stated.

The court president, Chief Ademola Odunade, while listening to both parties, observed that there was no more love between them. He, therefore, dissolved their union and handed the custody of the two children to the plaintiff.

He stated that the respondent could have access to them anytime through the court.
