Abakaliki Catholic diocese to build varsity, hospitals, school of Nursing— Bishop Nworie

Abakaliki Catholic Diocese is set to embark on significant developments, including the establishment of a Catholic University, hospitals, a School of Nursing, and more, according to Bishop Nworie.

Most Rev. Dr. Peter Chukwu, the Catholic Bishop Diocese of Abakaliki, revealed these plans during the golden jubilee celebration of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki at St. Theresa Cathedral, Abakaliki. Bishop Chukwu emphasized that the primary aim is to provide quality education for young people, thereby curbing cultism and addressing social issues prevalent in society.

Additionally, the Abakaliki Diocese is preparing to create a School of Midwifery, Bishop Michael Okoro School of Health Care Technology, and convert its existing Nursing school into a college of Nursing that will confer HND qualifications.

Bishop Chukwu took the opportunity to call on the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) to expedite the process of establishing a new Diocese in the state. He pointed out that since its creation in 1973, the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki has given rise to numerous parishes and is now due for the creation of a new Diocese.

Expressing concern about the lack of additional Dioceses in Ebonyi State compared to other states in the South East, Bishop Chukwu urged CBCN to address this imbalance. He emphasized the need for a new Diocese to bring the church closer to the people, citing the long distances priests currently have to travel for pastoral visits.

Governor Francis Nwifuru expressed joy at the growth of the Diocese and encouraged priests to represent the image of the Diocese positively. The event was attended by various Catholic Archbishops, Bishops, Governor Francis Nwifuru, former Governor Martin Elechi, and other distinguished personalities.
