Dr Abayomi also pledged to mobilise the individual and collective strengths of council members to add value to the university.
He made these pledges shortly after the inauguration of the Council by the Governor of Ondo State and Visitor to the university, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, at the International Event and Cultural Centre (The Dome) in Akure.
While acknowledging the challenge of funding, Dr Abayomi said he would mobilise other Council members to explore and attract alternative sources of income to the university. These, according to him, include sponsorships, endowments, grants and honorary ambassadorships, among others.
He said the council under him would be fair, courageous and just in addressing issues.
In his words: “Our ambition is to raise the university to international standard in terms of academic and research. That is our major objective. We intend to build a university that every graduating student will feel very proud of. That’s what we intend to do.’’
The council has the following distinguished Nigerians as members; Professor Wole Akeredolu; Princess Dupe Adetuwo; Mr. Wale Gbakinro, FCA; Arc. Tosho Ale; Mr Sam Erejuwa; Special Adviser on Education; and Commissioner for Finance.
Others are Commissioner for Economic Planning; Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology; Mr Remi Osiberu; Mrs Ibim Semenitari; Dr Ibrahim Eneye; and Dr Emmanuel Onyeama.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, has commended the new council and expressed optimism of better days ahead. He opined that the council is peopled with accomplished technocrats and academics who have made their marks in their chosen careers.
Professor Ajibefun said all the members of the university community are looking forward to a fruitful tenure with the new council members as the driving force.
Meanwhile, 39 fresh medical doctors produced by the Medical College of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma-Edo State, have been inducted into the medical profession.
They were inducted by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), the statutory federal agency saddled with the responsibility of regulating the professions of medicine, dentistry and alternative medicine in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr David Osifo, charged the new doctors to always have their Hippocratic Oath behind their minds, and make patients their focus.
The commissioner, who was represented by Dr Helen Eboreime, also enjoined them to handle only cases within their capacities, and refer others as quickly as possible.
He urged them to seek appropriate approval when going into private practice, just as he warned them to be wary of politicians and non-governmental organisations seeking to carry out medical missions, urging them to always demand permission for the exercise.
The vice chancellor of AAU, Professor Ignatius Onimawo, congratulated the new doctors for being found worthy in learning and in character to be inducted into the medical profession.
He admonished them to be meticulous in the discharge of duties and avoid mistakes that could have fatal consequences.
The vice chancellor enthused that AAU had attained high heights in the production of quality medical graduates, as the university is one of the institutions that had produced one of the few neurosurgeons in Nigeria.
The representative of the registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr Udugbai Ilevbare, praised AAU for its diligence in the training of medical students, adding that medical graduates of the institution have performed well in their places of assignments.
He urged inductees to be conversant with the Code of Conduct of the Medical Ethics in Nigeria, warning that anyone that brings the medical profession to disrepute would be held accountable.
He similarly enjoined them to embrace continuous learning, as it had become a prerequisite for renewal of practising licence.
Dr Ilevbare advised the medical doctors to always attend to their health through good sleep, healthy eating and proper exercises.
He urged them to avoid self-medication when sick, but should rather present themselves to their colleagues for treatment.
The highpoint of the event was the administration of relevant oaths on the new the doctors by the representative of the MDCN registrar, Dr Ilevbare.
