A better life or continued family ties?

Published by

Owing to the economic condition in Nigeria, citizens continue to migrate to countries with better economic atmosphere, especially in Europe and North America. FAVOUR BOLUWADE asked some Nigerians if they would accept an offer to take up a very lucrative job, $5million cheque, a luxury apartment and a car all from a company in the United States with the condition to never speak with their family members again.

Seriously!!! What kind of job is that? I will not speak with my family members: my parents, wife, children, siblings… Oooooo Jesus. It cannot just work that way. —Asaba Michael

Why would I not talk to my family members again because of life luxury? Who do I wanna spend the money with? —Segun

If I don’t take the job offer, even my family members will disown me and stop talking to me. I can’t lose at both ends. —Joke

How would they know my family members? What about friends that became family? My family would disown me if I don’t go.  —Omotayo

That’s not possible who will I spend the money for? —Lolu

No oh. In reality, it could cost me a great deal. I am certain the job won’t last for long. My family keeps me SANE.

—Ewaoluwa

Court asks Kwara APC gov candidate to authenticate WAEC Certificate in 30 days

My family means everything to me. I will not be poor with or without the cheque. I existed without the cheque but not without my family and I will still exist after.

—Kophy

Is my mum part of this family? If not, yes. So no. I would not. —Ibrahim

Who are those that will spend the money I’m labouring for? What is the essence of money without family? That’s not the type of blessing God wants for me. —Kayode

If I can still send them money, I will definitely take the job. Not speaking with them doesn’t mean I can’t send them money… Right? —Promise

Another opportunity would come up.  If not, I’ll make do with the opportunities I find here. My family is my plug and my most important means of happiness after God. —Ayobami

I can’t take it o. Who made me who I am? My parents. They laid the foundation that made me get that opportunity so if I’m instructed not to talk to them I won’t take it. Do they want to use me for rituals?  Because I’m sure there would be more to it. —Jade

I will create my family there. —Rid

You see, the condition of not speaking with family makes that offer bad, as sweet as it sounds. If you end up with that kind of money and you can’t use it with your family then what’s the use? So anything that would take me away from my family should rather go far from me. Family is everything. I rather remain in Nigeria managing the little I have till I get another offer to travel without a condition. —Neyo

I’m as good as dead if I can’t spend all that money with my family. No. Blood is thicker than water. The people I will be leaving here have been there for me in some ways and I’ve also derived joy just hearing from them. So NO.  I am not taking the job though it’s tempting and yeah, your family may not even care about you like you do about them but if one’s family gives one joy, it’s better not to trash them away. —Oluseye

Never. I will soon get all this in Nigeria with me talking with my family.

—Engr. Sunday

No way, what’s my success without my family being a part of it? —God’s Favour.
