75-year-old farmer, police officer, hacked to death in Ondo

THE Ondo State Police Command has arrested a middle aged man, over the killing of a 75 year old man, Mr. Olusegun Oyadele, and a police officer who tried to arrest him on his farm.

The suspect, a farmer, known and identified as “At all at all, lived in Sabo area of Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area of the state but work at a farm settlement known as Onipetesi camp.

The suspect was said to have hacked the septugenrian to death with cutlass in the early hours of Saturday while the old man was trying to dry his cocoa seeds

According to an eye witness, who explained that there was no altercation between the suspect and the old farmer but the suspect pounced on him and matchetted him to death.

He explained that the incident happened around 6:30am and was reported at the police station saying the suspect went berserk, threatening to kill more people, after killing the 75 year old, Oyadele who hailed from Ile Ife in Osun statee

The source said “the suspect caught the old man unaware and matchetted him severally before the old man gave up. The suspect threatened to kill other people on the farm before he ran away into the bush.”

Speaking on the development, the State Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Femi Joseph, said men of the state police from Enu owa police station mobilised themselves after the case was reported at the station by one Veronica Olawale.

The PPRO said four officers visited the scene of the incident but in an attempt to arrest the suspect, he matchetted and killed one of the police officers who came for his arrest, while four other people from the community were also attacked and matchetted.

Joseph however said that the command led by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gbenga Adeyanju, visited the camp to fish out the suspect who had been taken refuge in the forest after the incident.

He said it took the search party over 18 hours to arrest the suspect who was moving from one place to another.

According to Joseph, the suspect was arrested by the police with the assistance of the vigilante group in the area around 3am on Sunday after searching for him for about 13 hours.

Joseph said “the suspect was arrested in early hour of Sunday by the team of policemen from the command with the assistance of local vigilante group.

He was arrested in the forest around Tekunle village in Bolorunduro local government area of the state.

Joseph however said the body of the stain police officer had been deposited at the morgue while the four men attacked were receiving treatment as various hospital.

He also said the suspect, “at all at all” has been receiving treatment at the hospital saying the suspect would be arraigned after investigation into the matter.
