7 steps to get rid of bad breath

Published by

It is easy to keep your gums and teeth healthy and to improve your breath at the same time. According to research by Peter Jaret on Webmd, these simple steps will make your mouth feel clean and fresh.

1. Brush more often

Brush your teeth at least twice each day if you are concerned about your breath because the sticky buildup on your teeth, which is known as plaque, collects bacteria that causes bad breath. It can only be removed by brushing your teeth.

When brushing, don’t brush too hard because you can wear down your teeth by doing so, making them vulnerable to decay. Your dentist can also recommend a toothpaste that contains an antibacterial agent to kill the bacteria on your teeth.

2. Rinse your mouth

Rinsing your mouth daily with a good mouthwash will stop bad breath at its source.

You can also help your breath by rinsing your mouth with water after you eat. By doing this, you can get rid of food particles that get stuck in your teeth.

3. Brush your tongue

The tongue harbours bacteria. The coating that forms on your tongue can be a host of smelly bacteria. To get rid of this smelly bacteria, brush your tongue with your toothbrush. Carefully brushing your tongue may reduce odours.

4. Avoid foods that give bad breath

Some of the foods that cause bad breath are garlic and onions, and brushing after taking them doesn’t reduce it.

According to a spokesperson for the American Dental Association, Dentist Richard Price, “the substances that cause bad smells in garlic and onions make their way into your bloodstream and travel to your lungs, where you breathe them out.”

The best solution to the smell these foods bring is to either avoid eating them before you go to work or see friends, or better still, don’t eat them at all.

5. Stop smoking

Smoking stains your teeth, damages your gums, and gives you bad breath. To stop smoking, make deliberate efforts on your part to stop it and you can also make an appointment with your doctor to talk about prescription medications that can help you stop smoking for good.

6. Keep a healthy gum

Bad breath is caused by gum disease. This is a result of bacteria that gather at the base of your teeth. It is advisable to see your dentist if you have gum disease.

7. Drink water

If your mouth is dry, drink plenty of water. You can get tooth decay and bad breath if your mouth is dry.

If bad breath continues despite your efforts, make an appointment with your dentist to see if your problems are related to a medical condition.
