It goes without saying that a leader is judged based on the number of successes they record. How you do it, no one really cares, what really matters is that you fulfill the obligations committed into your hands in an exemplary fashion. Nowadays, discharging your duties as a leader is not even enough anymore; you have to do much more and strive to be a better leader.
How then would you achieve all that is expected of you and still be the “better leader” everyone expects you to be? You may wonder. Well, while there are so many ways to discharge a leadership duty and become a better leader, one of the best strategies has been proven to be via oratory, that is, how well you speak to your followers and subordinates.
Not to set you on an endless journey searching the internet on how to become a better leader, we’ve compiled a list of phrases you can use to that effect in this post. So, let’s see what we’ve got for you, shall we?
“THANK YOU”
I don’t know what type of leader you happen to be at the moment, but if you’re looking to become better than what you used to be, then you need to learn to say “thank you” more. However, the timing of it should also be right because it is one thing to say these two powerful words; it is another thing to utter them at the right time. As a show of appreciation for someone going the extra mile for you, positive feedback for a job well done, or as a response to constructive feedback, you should learn to say thank you to your employees or subordinates more often.
“Nice Job”
If ‘thank you” was powerful, then “nice job” can be considered magical! Giving positive remarks to your employees becomes even more powerful when it’s specific and timely. While you might not be compelled to use the phrase often, you should try to say it more when your establishment is going through a rough patch. For example, as a leader in an establishment that needs debt help, the least you can do to keep your employees motivated and highly productive is a commendation of their efforts.
“What do you think?”
Trust me; everybody loves it when they are made to feel important. Asking someone for their opinion about a subject is the ultimate demonstration of respect. And when you get those opinions from them, don’t forget to go back to phrase #1. In order to improve your leadership status in any establishment, always try to seek the opinions and ideas of others. Besides the sense of importance it gives to your subordinates, it also presents you with an opportunity to see things from a different perspective, probably even better than yours.
“How can I help?”
Yes, your employees might start to blush when you offer to help them with their tasks, but deep down, they’d feel a sense of support coming from you.
“What’s possible?”
In all that you do, always try not to be a skeptical leader. Instead of coming up with reasons why something might not work, ask yourself and others, “what’s possible?” Most especially when the establishment you are heading is going through a difficult spell. The greatest test of someone’s leadership credentials is not how well they are able to handle their daily obligations but rather how well they’re able to handle those same obligations under a different circumstance. For instance, when your establishment is going through a debt-ridden situation, you can ask questions like “how can we get an IVA company to get out of this mess,” rather than stating reasons why the company might not be able to pay up its debt.
“I don’t know”
Remember, being a leader doesn’t automatically make you an island of knowledge. When you truly don’t understand a situation, you should try to be as honest as possible, by telling those around you that you really don’t know. It demonstrates humility and authenticity. Trust me, you are likely going to get more supportive opinions when you’re completely honest with your subordinates.
“I believe in you”
The best, indeed, has been saved for the last. What a way to express confidence in someone’s ability or potential. As a leader, you should learn to show more confidence in people’s abilities and skills by telling them how much you believe in them.
