6,000 Nigerians die in road crashes yearly — FRSC

NO fewer than 6,000 lives were lost yearly through the road crashes across the country, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has said.

The FRSC Corps Marshall, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, disclosed this on Wednesday, at the RS4 2016 zonal retreat held in Makurdi, Benue State with the theme: “Strategies for Improved Enforcement and Public Education towards Reduction of RTC in the zone.”

According to him, “we are loosing up to 6000 lives annually nationwide. This is not good, the deaths of Nigerians as a result of road crashes are not acceptable’.

The Corps Marshall, who decried the high rate of lives being lost to road crashes, said that  the enforcement of the speed limiting device which came into effect last month was to save lives of Nigerians.

He, however, assured that through the implementation of the speed limiting device, road crashes, according to him,  would be reduced to the bearest minimum.

the FRSC boss said  that over 10, 000 drivers across the country had already complied with the speed limiting devices to curtail excessive speed.

While declaring the event opened, the state deputy governor, Engr. Benson Abounu, who represented governor Samuel Ortom at the event, lauded the FRSC in the zone for their effort in ensuring reduction of road crashes and indiscipline within its operational States of Benue, Nasarrawa and Plateau.

Abounu also intimated that the state government has sent a bill to the House of Assembly for the establishment of Benue State Road Management Agency in order to compliment the efforts of the FRSC in the state.
