600 members not paid salaries — ASUU ATBU

It has been revealed that more than 600 members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the ATBU Bauchi branch were not paid their salaries during the 2020 national strike action.

These members are primarily from the College of Medical Sciences, particularly those in the field of Biochemistry and non-clinical departments.

The disclosure was made by Dr Ibrahim Ibrahim Inuwa, the Chairperson of the ATBU ASUU branch, during a press conference held at the ASUU Secretariat in ATBU’s Yelwa campus.

Speaking to journalists, Dr Inuwa stated, “Virtually all members who are not part of the College of Medical Sciences were not paid. We also have a significant number of our members in the College of Medical Sciences who were affected.”

When questioned about why ASUU was addressing this issue now, considering it happened last year, Dr Inuwa explained, “As a union, we did not react solely based on emotions when this information was made public. We set up a committee to conduct preliminary investigations to verify the truth of the matter.”

Dr Inuwa emphasized that they engaged the Secretary of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), who is also a lecturer at the university. The MDCAN Secretary distanced the association from the issue, stating that they were on strike during that period.

The ASUU Branch Chairperson reiterated the union’s position that MDCAN, as an association, employs consultants who are not university lecturers but are affiliated with the Teaching Hospital.

He explained, “Some of them are consultants outsourced to provide medical training in the Teaching Hospital. It took time for us to unravel this complexity.”

Regarding their current demands, Dr Inuwa expressed the need for proper documentation of the actions and presentations made by Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, as they will be crucial for the incoming minister. He stated, “I have a general understanding of what happened, but it is important for us to clarify the records.”
