6 tips to avoid lightning strikes

Published by

Lightning strikes can be deadly, I’m sure you know that. But here’s the good news, there are simple precautions you can take to stay safe during storms. Here are some essential tips to avoid lightning strikes and protect yourself and your loved ones.

1. Stay Indoors

The safest place to be during a thunderstorm is indoors. Stay in a sturdy building or a hard-topped vehicle with the windows rolled up. Avoid small places such as picnic pavilions, and stay away from tall objects and open spaces.

2. Monitor Weather Forecasts

If your environment has a history of thunderstorms, you’re expected to stay informed about weather conditions. Yes, you can do this by monitoring local weather forecasts and thunderstorm warnings. Be prepared to take action if thunderstorms are predicted in your area and plan outdoor activities accordingly.

3. Avoid Water and Metal Objects

Water and metal are conductors of electricity, making them potential lightning targets.

Avoid swimming, bathing, or using plumbing fixtures during thunderstorms, and refrain from using electronic devices connected to electrical outlets.

4. Stay Away from Tall Objects

Tall objects such as trees, flagpoles, and light poles are prime targets for lightning strikes.

Stay away from these objects and avoid standing near them, especially in open areas like fields, or beaches.

5. Lightning Safety Inside

When indoors during a thunderstorm, avoid using corded phones, electrical appliances, and plumbing fixtures. Unplug electronic devices and avoid contact with water, including showers, baths, and sinks, as lightning can travel through plumbing systems.

6. Wait for the All-Clear

Wait at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before venturing outdoors. Lightning can strike from miles away, so it’s essential to wait until the storm has passed completely and it is safe to resume outdoor activities.

By following these tips, you can avoid lightning strikes and stay safe during thunderstorms.
