6 practical tips to keep your home dust-free during Harmattan

Published by

Harmattan, a season characterized by dry, dusty winds across West Africa, fills homes with dust, which can trigger allergies and respiratory issues.

To help you through this season, here are some tips on keeping your home dust-free during harmattan.

1. Use Heavy Curtains or Blinds

Thick curtains or blinds act as barriers and minimize the amount of dust entering your home. Choose machine-washable fabrics for easy cleaning, and clean your curtains weekly to prevent dust buildup.

2. Clean Regularly with a Damp Cloth

Dry dusting often stirs up more dust. Instead, use a damp microfiber cloth to clean surfaces like tables, shelves, and electronics. For floors, mop frequently with water mixed with a mild detergent.

3. Wash Bedding and Fabrics Often

Bedding, pillows, and curtains can trap a lot of dust. Wash your bed linens weekly with hot water to kill dust mites.

4. Keep Windows Closed

While fresh air is essential, open windows during harmattan invite dust into your home. Keep windows closed, especially on windy days. If you must open them, do so sparingly and ensure you clean the area afterward.

5. Place Doormats at Entrances

A simple doormat can reduce the amount of dust brought in from outside. Use doormats at all entrances. Encourage family and visitors to wipe their feet before entering.

6. Stay Hydrated and Protect Yourself

While protecting your home is vital, don’t forget to care for yourself. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated in the dry Harmattan air. Wear protective masks when cleaning to avoid inhaling dust particles.

Keeping your home dust-free during harmattan may seem like a lot of work, but with these tips, you can create a clean and comfortable living space.
