NLC President Ayuba Wabba
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba, has saluted the patience, resilience and patriotic of Nigerians, and commended Nigerian workers especially, for their steadfast and courage in keeping the country going.
In his message on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence, the NLC president commended Nigerian workers who in spite of “self-denials and unprecedented challenges in the polity, keep the country going.
“Your sense of loyalty is second to none. I urge you not to relent, for the sake of our fatherland,” he added.
However, Wabba cautioned the government against using the present challenges as a basis for taking panic decisions that could compromise the welfare of the people, undermine the national asset base and security.
“I have no doubt in my mind that well-thought out and genuine people-oriented policies will help us get out of this recession. In the life of an individual, at 56, one could either be gazing at the first part of their life or focus at second half of their life. But for a nation, one could take a more lenient view of life.
“Accordingly, I would urge Nigerians to take a long and positive view of our country instead of indulging in self-recrimination and bitterness that hurts the majority of us. We could have done better, certainly. We have been betrayed, no doubt.
“But time to rebuild is now, for they say, strength comes from rubble. We must never yield to despondency.
“At 56, let us rebuild, bandage one another, look each other in the eye with compassion and forge ahead, so that, a few more years from now, we could gather together again in pride and glory and shout to the world, Nigeria has come.”
