The Observatory of Religious Freedom in Africa (ORFA) released a damning report on Thursday, revealing alarming figures on Nigeria’s escalating security crisis.
Between October 2019 and September 2023, the country witnessed: 9,970 attacks, 55,910 fatalities, and 21,621 abductions.
The breakdown shows:
– 30,880 civilians killed
– 25,030 security forces or terror group members killed
– 21,532 civilians abducted
Christians bore the brunt, with: 16,769 killed while 11,185 were abducted during the period covered.
Muslims, on the other hand, suffered: 6,235 fatalities and 7,899 abductions, respectively.
Looking at the overall numbers, the ratio of Christians to Muslims killed was 2.7:1; the ratio of Christians to Muslims abducted was 1.4:1.
However, when taking into account the relative sizes of the Christian and Muslim populations within the different states, the ratio of Christians to Muslims killed increases to 6.5:1, and the ratio of Christians to Muslims abducted to 5.1:1, the report noted.
