In commemoration of this year’s World Toilet Day, about 500 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Saturday, staged a rally in Ibadan against rampant Open Defecation in Oyo.
Adorning Hypo Toilet Cleaner crested vests on their khaki trouser, the corps members walked from the NYSC Secretariat, Agodi Gate through Total Garden, Mokola and the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, campaigning against open defecation to passersby and commuters.
While speaking against open defecation, the corps members spoke on the imperativeness of personal hygiene, having houses built with toilets and against indiscriminate waste disposal.
Speaking, representative of the NYSC Oyo Coordinator, Mr Onanuga Ibrahim bemoaned that he lived in a place where people dumped their waste indiscriminately.
He added that he observed that there were several houses in Ibadan without toilets, many people sharing toilets, apart from others defecating in open spaces, nearby bushes, pathways, or streams.
Another corps member, Mr Ishola Jamiu said he observed that some who do not have toilets in their houses simply defecate in polythene nylon, bags and dump them on medians or in waste drums.
Addressing the corps members, Area Marketing Manager, Hypo Toilet Cleaner, South-West region, Mr Buchi Maduka tasked them to step down the campaign against open defecation and importance of personal and community hygiene in their various Places of Primary Assignment (PPA).
Noting that Oyo and South-West States boast of the highest prevalence of open defecation, Maduka said the target is to end open defecation in Oyo and promote safe hygiene.
He assured that that sensitisation against open defecation will continue to resonate in markets, and schools.
Maduka also spoke of commitment of his company to building and renovating toilets brought to its notice by the corps members, in a programme tagged, ‘Toilet Rescue’.
