5 benefits of joining a support group if you are grieving

After the loss of someone that has been a part of your life, in a small or big way, one of the systems that can help you grieve without deflecting is having a support group. A support group is a group of people who have common experiences or concerns and provide each other with encouragement, comfort, and advice.

What do you stand to gain from being in a support group?

1. The gift of being heard

A support group offers the gift of being heard without judgement but with empathy. You get to speak with people who can relate to your pain and listen to your rants without imposing “solutions” on you.

2. Sense of belonging

Being in a support group gives you a sense of belonging, like a community. You don’t feel odd because you are with people who can relate to all that you’re going through.

3. Guards one’s mental health

One’s mental health tends to suffer worse when one deals with grief alone rather than with others.

4. Learning

A support group offers a community that will help you learn to navigate in different ways you never thought of. You hear the stories of people, and you get access to their wealth of wisdom and ways of dealing with grief.

5. Opportunity to help

This also allows you to help people deal with their own, even as you tell your stories and discuss the grieving process. Also, being able to help people could make you feel fulfilled and better.
