The faceoff between the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) and the federal government have taken a new turn after the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) intervened in the matter on Friday. With his intervention, NARD reaffirmed their full trust and confidence in the Federal Government through the vice president, whose ability to amicably resolve the issue, the doctors reaffirmed the second time in days.
In a discussion show yesterday on CHANNELS TELEVISION, SUNRISE, the President of NARD Dr. Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, stated that Osinbajo’s intervention has positively changed the hardline stance of the doctors.
According to NARD President, “The Vice President is our only hope. But unfortunately, we met with him on Friday. On Saturday, we are getting a wrong information from the Minister of Labour. That’s personal.”
According to him, the disputes can only be resolved based on trust. Speaking of the significance of Osinbajo’s intervention, he said “We will do all we can by all means to call off the strike because it’s a trust thing. It’s not personal. If we have somebody that has integrity and we can trust, not the ones we discussed with earlier [referring to the Ministers of Labour and Health].”
The NARD leader said the Vice President has integrity needed for the Association to trust him. He says “He is someone we believe can make things work.”
Commenting, Rosemary Danesi, a Senior Lecturer in Employment Relations and Human Resources Management at the University of Lagos, says NARD’s confidence in Osinbajo “is a big deal. Once you have confidence that the person you are negotiating with is going to at the end of the day do something to ensure that all what you think were wrong will now be righted. That is the first stage to getting a settlement.”
The 37-day industrial action was called by NARD to address issues around welfare of resident doctors and the health sector. President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday has set up a Health Reform Committee headed by Vice President Osinbajo to come up with a comprehensive reform of the sector.
