Thirty youths have been arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State on a four-count charge of unlawful assembly bordering on cultism, a crime punishable under the new anti-cultism and terrorism law of Delta State, 2016.
Meanwhile, the accused persons are to be remanded in prison pending the advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).
Metro learnt that the 30 accused persons were arrested on December 29, 2016 by a detachment of men of the anti-cultism squad in Asaba and officers from the Ogwashi-Uku Police Division in one of the hotels in Ogwashi-Uku metropolis.
Unconfirmed report had it that men of the Nigerian Army were involved in the raid, which saw some of the cult boys scaling the fence in order to escape arrest.
During the raid, five battle axes and a hammer were said to have been recovered from the accused persons.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Andrew Aniamaka, who was contacted by Metro for the confirmation of the incident, said communities like Ogwashi-Uku, Ibusa and many others around Ndokwa axis had been marked out for onslaught against criminal elements who had been terrorising the communities.
Aniamaka then called on members of the public to cooperate with the police by providing timely information on the activities of the cultists whom he said the community people know as they are residents of the area.
