2nd Assembly of Oyo Youth Parliament holds inaugural sitting

The second Assembly of the Oyo State Youth Parliament had its inaugural sitting on Wednesday, March 30, 2021, with those in attendance being empowered with information to excel in their different constituencies. 

The event which had in attendance the Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Seun Fakorede; the Head of Department of Psychology, University of Ibadan, Prof. Adebayo Adejumo; British Nigerian Actor, Wale Ojo; Head of Department of Management and Accounting, Leadcity University, Tina Akinbo; youth honorables, amongst others, was held at the House of Chiefs Chambers, Secretariat.

In his opening remarks, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Fakorede commended the effort of the members of the youth assembly for their success in different activities since their inauguration. 

While charging them on the need to maintain peaceful coexistence and also be focused on the mission and vision of the Parliament, he mentioned that their creative works have shown that they were appointed based on merit.

In his welcome address, the Speaker of the Oyo State Youth Parliament, Israel Fawole, stated that the purpose of the lectures is to empower the youth honourables with the information needed to excel in their different constituencies. 

He, therefore, urged them to pay rapt attention to the details of the lectures and put them into practice for a successful administration.

In his presentation, the Head of the Department of Psychology University of Ibadan, Prof. Adebayo Adejumo reinstated the importance of proper research for good policymaking. According to him, research is a scientific process that helps to formulate solutions to problems based on facts.

Prof. Adebayo also urged the youth honorables to ensure adherence to proper research methodologies to formulate sustainable policies. He also assured the Parliament of his partnership in the areas of research to formulate policies.

In their separate presentations, the head of the Department of Management and Accounting Leadcity University, Tina Akinbo, and the British Nigerian Actor, Wale Ojo urged the honorables to maintain good communication and interpersonal relationship skills that will help them to manage people and offer value in their constituencies. 

While using their lives as examples, they also encouraged them to maintain good relationship with people, as well as to understand their perceptions and involve them in their activities.

During the official sitting which was presided by the Speaker of the Youth Parliament, Rt. Hon. Israel Fawole, the election of the principal officers, where we have Hon. Ijaola Peter(Kajola State Constituency) as the Majority Leader, Hon. Adesola Ronke (Oluyole State Constituency) as the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Ojo Joshua (Orire State Constituency) as the Chief Whip, Hon. Tobi Olatunji (Ibarapa Central/North State Constituency) as the Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Agboola Ibrahim (Oyo East/West State Constituency) as the Minority Leader. 

Also, some members of the Parliament were selected to lead various standing committees. 

In the same vein, a motion to mandate the provision of a youth house or parliamentary house and offices was sponsored and moved by Hon. Faozy Gazaly representing Ibadan South West Constituency 1. 

According to him, the purpose of the motion is to enable the members of the youth parliament to carry out their plenary sessions and meetings to facilitate the implementation of its core objectives.

In his response, the Speaker, Fawole stated that the Parliament needs furnished offices to execute its plans as well as an 18-seater bus for them for the smooth running and logistics operation of the Parliament.

Earlier at the inaugural sitting, awards were presented to the guests and further partnerships were agreed on.
