A 26-year-old man, Kusibe Adedoyin, was remanded at the Ilesha prison on Friday for killing his 78-year-old grandfather, Pa Akanbi Adedoyin, at Ilare-Ijesha in the Obokun local government area of Osun State.
The state police command Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Yemisi Opalola, made this known in a statement in Osogbo. She stated that the perpetrator committed the act last Monday at the residence of the deceased in the community.
She explained that Kusibe hit his grandfather on the head with a club following a sharp argument between them over ownership of farmland.
According to Opalola, the perpetrator was arrested by the police and later charged to court, where he was ordered to be remanded in prison.
Commenting on the incident via a statement in Osogbo, the Spokesperson of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mrs Kehinde Adeleke, said, “It was gathered that Kusibe Adedoyin, about 26 years old, is an addicted Indian hemp smoker who has been gradually going insane through the habit.”
“It was gathered on Monday, 22nd of July, 2024, that the said Kusibe Adedoyin, after being drugged, laid his hands on his grandfather at his residence at Isale Oja in Ilare-Ijesa, beat the man with a stick, and left him there in a pool of blood.”
“When the NSCDC, Obokun East Division, got to the scene, the man was quickly rescued to a nearby hospital because he was still conscious and breathing. The man was adequately attended to and was discharged a few hours later.”
“Thereafter, in synergy with the Nigeria Police, the said Kusibe Adedoyin was arrested and kept in police custody in Esaoke, and on Tuesday, July 23, he was taken to court, and currently, he has been remanded in the Ilesa Correctional Centre for further trial.”
“Unfortunately, the said Pa Adedoyin Akanbi, age 78, could not make it and gave up the ghost at his residence on Wednesday, July 24th, 2024, and was buried on Thursday by the family on July 25th, 2024.”.
Meanwhile, investigations conducted in the community revealed that the killer was living with his grandfather before the incident and that he was notorious for committing atrocities in the community.
Sources at the community palace further hinted that, due to his nefarious activities in the town, the king of the community, Owa Ilare, in the council once summoned his family to the palace and warned them to prevail on their child to be of good conduct in the town or be handed over to the police.
However, another informant who identified himself as Adebisi Olaniyan disclosed that, after the incident, the criminal tried to escape but was overpowered by youths in the town, who handed him over to the police to face the wrath of the law while some of his group members were also chased away from the domain.
He explained that, before the deceased’s death, he was unconscious and taken to a health centre in the community for first aid treatment before later being taken to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesha, where he finally gave up the ghost.
As of the time of filing this report, people in the community are still discussing the matter in twos and threes and expressing their dismay at the act they described as callous and wicked.
In his own submission, the monarch of the community, the Owalare of Ilare, Oba Adejoro Otebolaku, commended the security agencies for acting promptly to their calls and told members of the community that the law has taken its course.
He further advised the sons and daughters of the town to be of good character and shun any act that could bring disrepute to members of their families.
