KOGI state government on Tuesday said no fewer than 22, 240 households have benefited from the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) meant for the alleviation of poverty among the people.
The project coordinator, Kogi State Youth Empowerment and Social Support Operation (YESSO), Mr Noah Alilu, made the disclosure during a one-day interactive forum for the stakeholders of the programme.
He said the programme which involved the disbursement of N5000 bimonthly to the households, was meant to among other things ensure that the beneficiaries could afford one square meal per day.
He said the programme was already been implemented in six piloting local government areas out if the 21 local government areas of the state.
Alilu explained that efforts were on to have a single register for the people that would benefit from the series of intervention programmes being implemented in conjunction with the World Bank in the state.
According to him, at least 2, 640 communities would be covered by the exercise which aimed at having detailed data from the benefiting communities.
Speaking on the importance of the intervention social security programmes, the project coordinator said findings had shown that the various criminal activities going on in the society were a function of the people left behind by the government and the entire society.
He said the objective of the project, however, was “to increase access of the poor to youth employment opportunities, social services and strengthened safety net”.
He added that previous efforts at alleviating poverty failed because of poor coordination and lack of safety net platform.
Other reasons for the failure of previous efforts, according to Alilu, were a poor database, duplication of efforts, poor or lack of impact evaluation and lack of effective targeting.
He, however, noted that the present efforts were being faced with the problem of funding as the government had not been consistent with its 10 per cent counterpart funding for the implementation.
