214 rights abuses recorded in Bauchi in 2020 ― NHRC

Published by

Bauchi State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dala Yatcit, disclosed that within the year 2020, the Commission received a total of 214 different cases of human rights abuses from across the state.

Dala Yatcit while giving the breakdown of the abuses said that it included rape cases, torture, use of force, physical abuse as well other forms of gender-based violence.

She, however, said that the Commission was able to amicably resolved some of the human rights abuses while others are pending at the courts for judicial arbitration.

Dala Yatcit explained that the Commission is a statutory body set up by the law to encourage the general public whose rights are violated by anyone to feel free and report to the Commission for necessary action.

The Coordinator who was speaking when she paid a courtesy visit on the leadership of the Bauchi State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Press Center also advocated for the enactment of more laws to protect children’s rights opining that the existing ones are not adequate.

In his response, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Bauchi State council Chairman, Umar Sa’id, called on the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to establish offices at local governments levels across the state.

According to him, a lot of people especially those that live in the rural areas do not know the existence and duties of the National Human Rights Commission despite the rate of rights violation in the rural areas.

He said that if the Commission has local governments offices, oppressed villagers could have their rights protected like other enlightened citizens.

Umar Sa’idu then assured that Journalists in the state are ever ready to partner with the commission to protect the human rights of the people of the state and ensure that justice is done to victims of the violence.
