2,030 corps members begin orientation in Edo

A total of 2,030 corps members on Monday started their orientation programme at the temporary orientation camp of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) at Okada, Edo State.

According to the Edo State coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs. Japhet Akyam, the number consisted of prospective corps members who were duly registered at the close of registration on Friday, November 25, 2016.

In his remark shortly after the swearing in of the corps members by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Cronwell Idahosa, who was represented by Justice Anthony Irabor, Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, said the state government will continue to support the NYSC in order to create jobs and develop the state.

Obaseki, who was represented by his deputy, Philip Shaibu, said his government was delighted to identify with the NYSC scheme due to its numerous developmental contributions to the state.

He noted that the NYSC was designed to serve as a medium for national unity, integration and even spread of the much needed professional manpower in the country.

Admonishing the corps members to avoid social vices, the governor said, “I expect you to be involved in the fight against economic crimes, drug trafficking, women and child trafficking, through mass and adult literacy programmes, community healthcare delivery services and other programmes of government.”

State coordinator, Mrs Akyam, used the opportunity to lament the dearth of facilities at the orientation camp, appealing to Governor Obaseki to uplift the facilities.
