Some nations provide their citizens with better passports than others, allowing them to travel more freely without having to deal with the inconvenience of obtaining visas.
The list of top African passports in 2025 reflects the strength of diplomatic ties and regional cooperation. Seychelles and Mauritius lead due to their well-established networks and international engagement, while South Africa, Botswana and Kenya maintain strong regional and international mobility, ensuring significant travel freedom for their citizens.
According to the 2025 ranking of African countries by the Henley Passport Index, Seychelles holds the title of the strongest passport for 2025, granting its holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 156 countries, ranking 25th globally.
Mauritius follows in second place with access to 151 countries, securing the 29th spot worldwide. South Africa ranks third in Africa, with its passport providing access to 106 countries and placing 48th globally.
Even the rankings remain the same barring the exclusion of Tanzania in 10th place last year, in place of Morocco in the same spot this year.
Namibia and Lesotho switched places between the 5th and 6th position, with Namibia ousting Lesotho from the 5th position.
Similarly, Malawi and Kenya switched between 8th and 9th position, with Malawi being 8th this year as opposed to being 9th last year.

Seychelles ranks first on the list in Africa, and 25th globally, with 156 visa-free destinations.
The most powerful passport in Africa allows visa-free access to many countries in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Its strong diplomatic relationships contribute to its high mobility for citizens.
Second on the list is Mauritius ranking 29th globally with 151 visa-free destinations.
Mauritius has visa-free access to countries across Europe and Asia and the country’s focus on international trade and tourism aids its strong diplomatic network.
With a global ranking of 48 and third in Africa, and 106 visa-free destinations, South Africa’s regional influence and economic strength have secured broad visa-free access across Africa and parts of Asia and South America.
It remains a top passport in sub-Saharan Africa.
Botswana’s political stability and diplomatic initiatives provide citizens with decent mobility.
With visa-free access to 88 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the country has a global ranking of 57.
Ranked 62nd globally with 81 visa-free destinations, Namibian passport holders can travel to key destinations without a visa, reflecting strong bilateral ties.
Namibia’s focus on tourism and diplomacy aids in improving travel freedom.
Lesotho’s small size hasn’t limited its passport’s strength, providing visa-free access to many regional countries and some in Asia.
The country benefits from agreements with neighbouring countries and beyond and ranks 63rd globally with 80 visa-free destinations.
The Eswatini passport offers solid travel options within Africa and select destinations in Europe and Asia.
With a global rank of 64 and 79 visa-free destinations, Eswatini boosts strong regional cooperation and plays a significant role in its mobility.
Ranked 65th globally, Malawi’s growing international presence has helped it secure agreements that enhance visa-free access.
With 78 visa-free destinations, its passport offers access to key countries in Africa and parts of Asia.
Kenya’s economic and regional importance has resulted in 77 visa-free access.
The country enjoys strong ties with countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa and is ranked 66th globally.
Morocco is ranked 67th globally and has a strategic location and historical ties with Europe to enhance its passport strength.
Moroccan citizens can travel 66 visa-free to several countries in the Middle East and parts of Europe and Africa.
