Peter Obi
Former governor of Anambra State and Presidential aspirant on the platform of the People Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Peter Obi, on Tuesday counselled Nigerians that comes 2023, they should not repeat the mistake of voting incompetent leader as they did during the 2015 and 2019 general elections, as doing so would bring greater consequences to the country.
Obi made the call in Lagos during a consultation visit to PDP Stakeholders at the Ikoyi office of former deputy national chairman of the party, Chief Olabode George, saying that Nigeria was currently going through a very difficult time that must not be allowed to continue else the whole country would pay for it.
The presidential hopeful, however, tasked the PDP leadership and faithful to ensure that person with capacity, competency and commitment to change the trajectory of Nigeria was elected in the primary as the candidate of the party, maintaining that Nigerians owed it a duty to ensure that they “don’t make mistake in 2023 by voting for incompetent leader.”
“We all have responsibility to ensure that we don’t make mistake in 2023 by voting for incompetent leader,” Obi warned.
“This country is going through a very difficult time and we must not allow it to continue otherwise all of us we pay for the consequences.
“We must ensure that the candidate with capacity, competency and commitment to change the trajectory of Nigeria is elected in the primary as the candidate of the party,” he said.
Speaking further, the former vice presidential candidate said his past records in Anambra State speak for him on how he would manage the affairs of the country properly, adding that it was now the time for Nigerians to invest in credible candidate like him, come 2023 General Elections
“People can compare my past with other candidate. Interrogate people’s past and ask question about where some aspirant was in the past and how they arrive at their present. Some people have told different stories in the past that they didn’t fulfilled. Now is the time to invest in credible candidate like me,” he said.
The former Anambra governor, while speaking on the insecurity that had ravaged the country, promised to address the menace, saying he was committed to ensure people have a means of livelihood as, according to him, lifting more people out of poverty would reduce criminality, banditry, among others.
“Firstly, you have to ensure people have a means of livelihood. When people’s means of surviving is not guaranteed, they are tools for anything. The more you lift people out of poverty, the more you reduce criminality, banditry, among others,” he said.
Chief George, who is also the Atona Oodua of the Source, in his remark, said that PDP as a party had the obligation to ensuring that the presidential ticket was zoned to the South, warning: “Anything more than that will be chaotic.”
“From 1999, it is the tradition and culture of our great party to announce where the presidency will be zoned to, but to keep quiet now will send a wrong signal to the electorate.
“Remember when APC came, they said they don’t believe in zoning but they have done their zoning now. If we fail to do so, it will become a national campaign issue.
“Zoning is a gift from the founding fathers of this country to our party and this nation, now it is going round, for us to be quiet means there is something that is not right.
We are noted for that culture and we must sustain it,” the PDP chieftain stated.
George said that the former governor, Obi, had proven on several occasions to be a trusted, responsible and respectable person and full of capacity to run the affairs of this country effectively, adding that the PDP presidential candidate for the coming general elections would not be like that ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who promised and failed.
“APC told us they will fight corruption and insecurity but that still remain a challenge in the country,” he said.
“Security is the number one priority of any government so if you cannot guarantee that, then what are you doing in government?” he queried.
