Kano Deputy Governor, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna
AS the forthcoming 2023 general election gathers momentum, no fewer than nine commissioners have resigned their appointments in Kano State.
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had, on Sunday morning, directed all his political appointees interested in the 2023 elections to resign before Monday.
According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Abba Anwar, the governor said the directive was in compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022.
Notable among the political appointees who tendered their resignation letters are the deputy governor, Nasir Gawuna, who resigned from his position as the Commissioner for Agriculture.
The Chief of Staff to the governor, Ali Haruna Makoda, also has resigned his appointment and may contest for the governor’s seat or for a seat in the House of Representatives.

Commissioner for Rural Development, Musa Ilyasu Kwankwaso, announced his resignation in an audio clip aired across radio stations in the state. He resigned to contest in the House of Representatives election.
It will be recalled that before the governor’s directives, Alhaji Sadiq Wali had resigned as Commissioner for Water Resources in order to vie for the governorship seat in the state.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Murtala Sule Garo, has also resigned from his position. A source close to him disclosed that he may likely contest for the governor’s seat.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Alhaji Nura Muhammed Dankade, has also tendered his resignation letter.
Other cabinet members who have resigned their appointments to contest the House of Representatives election are Commissioners for Education, Tourism, Special Duties and Transport, Sanusi Said Kiru, Ibrahim Ahmad Karaye, Mukhtar Ishaq Yakasai and Mahmoud Muhammad Santsi respectively.
Tribune Online reports that though the State Secretary to Government (SSG), Alhaji Usman Alhaji, has indicated interest to contest in the governorship election, he is yet to tender a letter of resignation as of the time of filing this report.
