2022 census: Why 2023 elections will not affect exercise ― NPC boss

As the Nigerian Population Commission (NPC) gears up for the conduct of the 2022 Population and Housing census, the Commission’s Chairman, Hon Nasir Isa Kwarra, on Monday, assured that the 2023 general elections will not interfere with the exercise.

He said there was still a long time for the election campaign to commence, stating that the period in between was enough for conducting the census.

The Chairman stated this at the opening of the census management training for Chairman and Federal Commissioners.

His words: “We should be able to take the census while preparation for election is ongoing. You know we have a long period between campaigning from June to February next year. Such a long period so it can take us a little a few numbers of days to conduct.”

The Chairman who also assured the conduct of the exercise in 2022, said the Commission was still awaiting the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He maintained that preparations for the 2022 Population and Housing Census were on course even as he expressed confidence that the prospect for an accurate and reliable census appears brighter than ever.

“I can assure that the census will be conducted and for me to give any particular date at this moment. I can’t do that, because the national leadership is still discussing the Matter and they will let the nation know. I can’t take May out. But I can tell you that very soon you hear from Mr  President,” he said.

On the training, he said the goal of the training is to engender deeper and common understanding of the Strategies and Methodology of the 2022 Population and Housing Census among top functionaries of the Commission.

According to him, the training underscores the determination and readiness of the Commission to deliver on its mandate of conducting a credible and reliable census.

“The Chairman and Federal Commissioners stand at the top of the hierarchy of the Commission and saddled with the responsibilities of not only formulating policies for the Commission but also ensuring their effective implementation.

“They constitute the drivers of the census process who need to be properly equipped with the deep knowledge and complexity of a sensitive national assignment like the census,” he noted.
