Ahead of the conduct of the next census, the National Population Commission (NpopC) has trained its public relations officers across the country on improved advocacy and information management.
It said this became imperative as constant dissemination of the right and timely information and effective engagement of stakeholders through advocacy constitutes an integral component of Population intervention activities.
Speaking at the opening of the 5-day capacity building workshop theme: “Getting the People Involved,” in Abuja, the Commission’s Chairman, Nasir Isa Kwarra said constant and effective engagement of the people through aggressive publicity and advocacy is a crucial first step it must take in the attainment of its mandate.
“It is like the lubricant for the successful implementation of our mandates in the spheres of the census, vital registration, population management, the conduct of specialised surveys and mapping.
“Information and advocacy not only mobilise the people on these activities but also help to clarify possible misrepresentation and misperception that are bound to occur in the process,” he said.
In view of the coming census exercise, he said the workshop among others is expected to enhance the understanding of the public affairs officers at the Headquarters and State offices on the strategic direction of the present Commission and their expected roles;
Also, he said it will help to identify critical stakeholders in the implementation of the Commission’s activities and devise effective strategies for their engagement.
Earlier, Chairman, Public Affairs Committee, Dr. Eyitayo Oyetunji said the conduct of the workshop is a testament to the Commission’s determination to effectively mobilize Nigerians not only for the 2022 population and Housing Census but also to other activities of the commission.
“With the Commission’s upcoming activities, challenges associated with the changing nature of the job and the work environment, a skilled, knowledgeable workforce with employees who are adaptive, flexible, and focused on the task at hand is crucial,” he added.
