2021 Osun NUJ Professional Awards open entries, to celebrate journalism excellence

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun Council has announced the opening of entries for the 2021 Osun NUJ Professional Awards, a prestigious annual event recognizing outstanding journalists in Osun and Nigeria as a whole. Held as a highlight of the NUJ’s Press Week, the awards celebrate excellence across seven categories, fostering ethical journalism and honoring those who elevate the profession through impactful storytelling.

A statement by the Awards Committee says the awards, established to promote high standards in journalism, are open to bona fide NUJ members practicing in Osun State. Categories include Best Reporter (Print), Best Reporter (Electronic), Best Newscaster (Radio/Television), Best Investigative Reporter, Best Information Officer, Best Broadcasting Station (Best Radio/Television of the Year), and Best Photojournalist. It said these categories reflect the diverse contributions of journalists, from investigative reporting to visual storytelling and organizational excellence.

To qualify, applicants must submit a handwritten application to the Professional Awards Committee at the NUJ Secretariat in Osogbo, including work published or broadcast between September 1, 2020, and August 31, 2021. Entries require endorsement by a fellow NUJ chapel member and are open for four weeks, ending September 30, 2021. Candidates may apply for only one category, ensuring a fair and focused evaluation process. The criteria emphasize originality, accuracy, ethical standards, and significant impact in the field, with winners selected by a panel of experienced journalists, media professionals and scholars.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, the preeminent body of media practitioners in the country, has built a strong reputation for advocating media professionalism and addressing industry challenges. The awards, launched as part of Press Week activities, have grown in significance, earning recognition within Nigeria’s media landscape for spotlighting talent in Osun and by extension Nigeria. Past winners include seasoned reporters and broadcasters who have gained acclaim for their contributions to public discourse and achieving national prominence.

The Osun NUJ Professional Awards hold particular importance in a region known for its vibrant media scene. By honoring seven recipients annually, the awards highlight individual and organizational excellence, encouraging healthy competition and inspiring journalists to uphold integrity. The ceremony, expected to draw media stakeholders, government officials, and the public, underscores the role of journalism in shaping society.

“This year’s awards will continue our tradition of celebrating those who inform, educate, and hold power to account,” said the Osun NUJ Chairman, Wasiu Ajadosu. “We invite all eligible journalists to submit their best work and join us in showcasing the power of ethical journalism.”

Entries are now open, and the NUJ encourages members to seize this opportunity to gain recognition for their excellence in the field.
