2019: Politicians warned against making hate speeches during campaigns

POLITICIANS and other political actors in Bauchi state in particular and the country in general have been warned against making hate speeches and mudslinging during thier electioneering campaigns in order not to incite violence and heat up the polity.

The warning was made by a onetime Commissioner of Information and later Special Duties in Bauchi State, Engineer Mohammed Damina gave during an interaction with news men in Bauchi on Monday.

Mohammed Damina advised that politicians should refrain from criticizing and defaming the image of their opponents during the electioneering campaigns because according to him such unguarded utterances was capable of heating up the polity thereby creating a chaotic atmosphere.

He said: “Making hate speeches during campaigns can fuel crisis, divisions and heat up the polity. We don’t want it, we are not encouraging it, the truth should always be told. Politics is not a dirty game as some people think, it is acceptable to God and when you do it, you are accountable to God.”

“In this regard, I want to commend INEC and other peace organisations for inviting candidates of political parties to sign the peace accord. This has gone a long way to foster peace in the state before the election,” he observed.

The former Commissioner then appealed to the electorates to vote for leaders who have integrity and not people who use the money to entice voters to their side, pointing out that since Nigeria election represents the image of democratic setting in the eyes of international communities, the leaders must do the right thing.
