2019: NHRC receives 449 complaints of rights violations in Plateau

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has said it received 449 complaints from residents of Plateau on cases of human rights violations in the state between January and December 2019.

The North Central Coordinator of NHRC, Mrs Grace Pam, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday in Jos.

Pam said the commission had recorded a tremendous decrease in violations of human rights in 2019 when compared to the 1,106 complaints received in 2018.

The coordinator said that the spate of violations of rights of children was particularly giving the commission serious concerns.

According to her, most of the petitions are of child abandonment, unlawful detention and domestic violence.

Pam explained that of the 449 cases reported in the period under review, 256 were treated and concluded, with 193 still unresolved.

“From January to December 2019, we received 449 complaints across Plateau, and we successfully treated and concluded 256 of the cases while 193 are still being looked into.

“Child abandonment, domestic violence, unlawful arrest and detention, child abuse, rape, a threat to life and inhuman treatment are among the most prevalent cases we received in the period under review,” she said.

The coordinator also said that the commission received cases of right to inheritance, denial of access to children, dismissal from service and denial of entitlements.

She further listed other cases as defamation of character, denial of the right to education, abduction and extrajudicial killings.

Pam said cases such as forced marriage, domestic abuse, harassment, intimidation, non-payment of wages, and violation of rights to personal liberty, among others, were also among cases recorded by the commission in 2019. (NAN)
