2019: King of Lagos party, Banky W says he’s ready

Banky W’s decision to join the race to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives in 2019 on the platform of the Modern Democratic Party (MDP) may have received the support of some of his friends and associates in the entertainment industry, but a big task awaits the music star.

Banky W, 37, said he would run under MAP, a political party founded in 2017 by some youth associations.

While many people did not see the Banky W’s announcement coming, those who are close to him are of the opinion that the singer has always nurtured a political ambition and has been working behind the scenes to bring the dream to life.

Banky chose last Saturday to declare his intention during the debut convention of the party in Lagos, and if the resounding ovation he got inside the hall and the aftermath public support from his colleagues is anything to go by, the king of Lagos party as he prefers to be called may soon become a member in the country’s green chamber.

While the task ahead of the musician may be hard, public commentators are saying that whether he wins or not running for public office is an extra push against the ceiling of mystery that makes it look like serving Nigeria isn’t for good people or that it’s the reserve of a certain class of people.

Armed with the hope mantra, Banky, who is seeking to represent Eti-Osa Federal Constituency noted that there is a need for renewed hope and results, just like the rest of Nigeria.

“Our generation needs a realistic rallying point. We need to begin in community, earn our way into the system and up the ladder. We need someone to stick their neck out and pave the way.

“The problem is that we’ve always looked only to our leaders for change… instead of looking in the mirror and at the neighbors around us. Isn’t it ironic that we are the ones we’ve been waiting for all along?

“I have shared this vision with quite a few people. Some have been incredibly supportive, but some have advised against it. I am under no illusions that this run will be easy. Considering who we are going up against, this is almost impossible. They said we don’t have the money to run… we say our strength lies in our numbers. They said we don’t have the structure, we say we will attempt to build it. They said “what if you lose”? I say, what if we win?”
