As preparations for the 2019 elections gather momentum, gladiators from the major parties, at the weekend, intensified consultations, even as they crisis-crossed states to finetune strategies for the crucial polls.

Leaders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took their campaign to regain power to the North, where the party has zoned its presidential ticket.

The national chairman of the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Uche Secondus, on Saturday, led some members of the National Working Committee (NWC)  of the party to a closed-door meeting with former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, at his Minna residence in Niger State.

Secondus was said to have told the former Nigerian leader that the PDP “is ready for the 2019 general election.”

Secondus was accompanied to the meeting by the national secretary,  Alhaji Umar Ibrahim Tsauri; National Secretary, Alhaji Abdullahi Maibasira; National Financial Secretary; Austin Akobundu National Organising Secretary Ambassador Ibrahim Kazaure, National Vice Chairman (North), and Mr Kola Ologbodiyan, National Publicity Secretary.

A source close to the meeting informed Sunday Tribune that Secondus also briefed General Babangida about the efforts being made by the leadership to “ reposition the party for the tasks ahead”.

It was gathered that the NWC of the party also expressed gratitude for what was described “ as the role the former Nigerian leader played before and after the crisis” and especially during the National Convention of the party.

“We briefed him on development in the party, especially how we are trying to reposition the party

“We also briefed him on development in the country and preparations for the 2019 general elections.”

It was learnt that Babangida “received the delegation warmly” and assured it of his support at all times.

According to the source, which also attended the meeting, the former Nigerian military ruler restated his belief in the PDP and assured that he would always give the party the necessary support.

Babangida emphasised his belief in the unity of Nigeria and asked everyone to work towards ensuring peace remained in the country.”

The delegation had since returned to Abuja.
