2019 Budget saga: group cautious Lagos assembly not to impeach Ambode

Published by

A group, Lagos Liberation Movement (LLM), on Thursday, urged the State House of Assembly to rescind plans to commence impeachment process against Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, warning that the decision to impeach the governor would be counter-productive.

Convener of the group, Comrade Mark Adebayo, gave the warning at a conference which he addressed at the Lagos Airport Hotel in Ikeja, saying Governor Ambode should be allowed to complete his remaining months in office as he still enjoyed the full support of Lagosians.

LLM convener wondered why the Lagos State House of Assembly would commence an impeachment process against the governor barely weeks to the elections, saying Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution was clear on what constitutes infractions.

Adebayo, while declaring that the allegations levied against Governor Ambode by the House were not done in good faith, further warned that the group and other civil society organisations were poised to commence a protest march at the Assembly if it went ahead to commence the impeachment process.

“We have already put together a comprehensive petition to the anti-graft agencies and multilateral organizations on the reckless and irresponsible wastage of the state resources by the legislative arm of government.

“Our organizations are embarking on a thorough inspection of all constituency projects for which funds have been allocated in the last 12 years and will make a comprehensive report of our findings public in the coming years,” the LLM boss said.

This was as he reiterated that the state governor, Mr Ambode had earlier notified the House of the readiness of the 2019 Budget, but the House did not give him attention because it was engrossed in election matters.

“We call on all men of goodwill including President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on his political ally not to proceed on this path of self-destruction and call them to order. Lagos assembly is embarking on a voyage that can only be destructive,” he said.
