If you are a student of what is going on in the society you will have discovered that the general outlook of 2019 is one of uncertainty, fear, anxiety and the horizon seems hazy and gloomy. The general elections coming up early next year is being greeted with a myriad of feelings, reactions and attitudes.
Oyo APC challenges Shittu’s political history
Many people have been dealt with badly by life in the past few months and many are groaning under the yoke of unpaid salaries, lost jobs, unprofitable businesses, insecurity etc.
Politicians are invading our lives and are busy trying to convince us that voting them in will create the Eldorado we are all craving for but most people are not buying their stories. People are skeptical and cynical . . . “we have heard all this before and all we got at the end of the day were dashed hopes and broken promises.” The prophets of doom have also gone to town to create fear and anxiety in the populace.
As this year rolls to an inevitable end we need to be careful how we look at things. We must not lose hope.
“When things are bad, we take comfort in the thought that they could always get worse. And when they are, we find hope in the thought that things are so bad they have to get better.” Malcolm S. Forbes
What we see will determine what will become of us in the days to come and in the new year. We can either throw our hands down in despair or brace up and face the challenges of the times. We can either postpone our plans or plunge headlong strategically.
The times we are in now will demand we must be very strategic in whatever we do. We need to revisit our dreams, plans and aspirations and overhaul our strategy to suit and overcome the adversity of the times. The days of doing business as usual is over. Those who do business as usual will suddenly realize that it’s over with their business.
This season demands discipline in every department of our lives. The days of frivolous spending should be over. We must be prudent how we spend our resources- money, time and energy. The days of “killing time” should be something we do not engage in. Bad habits must be jettisoned fast else we get swept off by the wayside as bad habits are dangerous distractions.
Someone said “the chains of habit are so small to be noticed until they become too strong to be broken” – so we need to watch out and ensure we cultivate only good habits.
In these hard times one crucial key to success is to always keep the big picture in view. We must always remember that our focus determines our feelings. If we focus unduly on the adversity and uncertainties of the times we are bound to be discouraged. If we have “an-end-result-focus” we will be motivated to look beyond “the now” to see our dreams comes to pass. Focusing on the big picture will motivate us in these hard times to persevere and to be tenacious.
We must be strong emotionally because we will hear and see things that will shake us to the bones. The spate of calamities and bad news that will still abound must not be allowed to throw us off balance. When we allow what we see or hear to get into us we are bound to be discouraged, which is a luxury we cannot afford.TO BE CONTINUED
