2 men jailed 6 months for criminal conspiracy

A Makurdi Magistrates Court, Makurdi, Benue State on Thursday sentenced two men – Stephen Vagi, 31, and Tersoo Adoon, 28 – to six months imprisonment each, for criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbances and causing grievous hurt.

The Magistrate, Mohammed Ibrahim, handed down the sentence after the duo pleaded guilty to the allegations.

He, however, gave them a fine of N5,000 each.

Earlier, the Police prosecutor, Mr Omaye Ujata, had told the court that Mr Raymong Mbaboy, Special Adviser to Benue Governor on Community Development, had lodged a complaint at the Area Command, Gboko, in which he accused the duo of committing the offences.

“The complaint was lodged by the government official and the case was transferred from Area Command Headquarters, Gboko, to Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Makurdi.

“Mbaboy reported that he was at a thanksgiving mass at his village, Gando, in Gboko Local Government, when the accused, both residents of the same village, confronted him and demanded for money.

“He said that when he refused, they started causing confusion which resulted into a fight between rival political party supporters.

“He further said that in the course of the fight, two people, identified as Aondokaa Atim and Aondofa Atim, were stabbed by the accused, using pieces of broken bottles,” Ujata said.

The prosecutor further told the court that the accused, who were promptly arrested, later confessed to committing the crime during police investigation.

He said, however, that they had no previous crime records.

Ujata said that the offense contravened sections 97, 247 and 116 of the penal code laws of Benue State 2004.
