The Anambra Police, in collaboration with sister agencies and the State Vigilantes, have neutralized two members of a notorious kidnapping gang operating in the state and successfully rescued a kidnap victim, while six others managed to escape with bullet wounds.
The State Police Commissioner, Mr Aderemi Adeoye, made this disclosure during a press conference at the Command’s Headquarters in Amawbia on Wednesday. He emphasized that under his watch, there would be zero tolerance for violent crimes in the state.
According to the CP, on the evening of July 11, 2023, at approximately 8:13 pm, the police, in collaboration with Anambra State Vigilantes, rescued a kidnap victim and neutralized two members of the notorious gang at Ichida bus stop along the Ichida-Igboukwu expressway.
Additionally, they recovered one AK47 rifle, two pump-action guns, two AK47 magazines, thirty-two live ammunition, and a Highlander jeep belonging to the victim.
Preliminary information reveals that the gang, consisting of eight members and operating with two vehicles, a Grey Highlander jeep and a white Lexus 350, had abducted the victim in her Ash Highlander jeep. Fortunately, the victim was rescued unhurt and has already been debriefed.
The Commissioner also informed the press about another incident that occurred on the same day at 8:30 pm. Joint security operatives attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) were on patrol around the Uga-Ezinifite Expressway when they attempted to stop two suspicious vehicles, a Highlander jeep and a white Lexus 350 without a license plate.
The vehicles attempted to evade security screening, prompting the joint forces to give chase. During the pursuit, the operatives engaged the gang in a gun battle, causing them to abandon the vehicles and flee. Upon searching the abandoned vehicles, the security forces recovered two automatic pump-action guns, eleven live cartridges, and a bag containing a walkie-talkie, a cell phone, and other incriminating items.
Furthermore, evidence of bloodstains was found in all the vehicles, indicating that the criminals had sustained bullet wounds while escaping. The Command urges operators of public and private hospitals to admit and report anyone seeking treatment for bullet wounds or related injuries to the nearest police station.
CP Adeoye issued a warning to criminals in the state, urging them to change their ways and seize the legitimate opportunities provided by the State Government for survival. Failure to do so would result in discomfort and the relentless pursuit of their criminal activities.
