2 brothers docked for allegedly possessing cell phone

A 21-year-old man, Abdullahi Mohammed and his brother, Abdullahi Abubakar, were on Friday arraigned before a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja for allegedly possessing a stolen cell phone.

The defendants, who reside at Ereke Junction Karmo, Abuja, were standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and being in possession of stolen property.

The Prosecutor, Mrs Ijeoma Ukagha, told the court that on March 8, one Falat Ismail, the Chairman of Vigilance Group in Agwan Hausa Karmo, reported the matter at Karmo Police Station.

Ukagha informed the court that on the same date at 2:30 a.m., the of vigilance group in Agwan Hausa Karmo, Abuja, arrested Mohammed and brought him to the station.

She alleged that Mohammed was caught in possession of one Techno WX 3 mobile phone suspected to be stolen.

The prosecutor said that during a police investigation, Mohammed confessed to stealing the phone and led the police to arrest his brother Abubakar who also specialised in stealing phones.

Ukagha said that the offences contravened sections 79 and 319 A of the Penal Code.

The trial judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, granted bail of N50,000 to the defendants each with a surety in like sum.

Maiwada said that the sureties must have reasonable means of livelihood and must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

He ordered that the sureties present an affidavit of means and passport-size photographs to the court’s registrar.

He adjourned the case until April 15 for hearing.
