18 years after, Kechi Okwuchi honours Sosoliso crash victims

Published by

Kechi Okwuchi, one of the two survivors of the tragic Sosoliso plane crash, has honoured 60 of her schoolmates who lost their lives on December 10, 2005, with a remembrance post on her X account.

Okuchi, in an X post today, described those 60 students who lost their lives as “angels. ”

She, however, prayed that they would continue to watch over her and the other survivors to make memories on their behalf.

Her remembrance post reads: “Dear 60 Angels, 18 years have passed since the Sosoliso plane crash that took your lives among other dear souls while sparing mine and 1 other. Another year, another new set of milestones. All for you. Please keep watching over me as I make even more memories for us🕊️ #60Angels.”

Recall that 18 years ago, Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 crashed at about 14:08 local time while landing in stormy weather at Port Harcourt International Airport.

The flight left Abuja for Port Harcourt carrying 110 people.

The captain of the McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 was 48-year-old Benjamin Adekunle Adebayo.

Many passengers survived the initial impact but died as a result of the fire, while other passengers later died from their injuries.

Port Harcourt Airport had one fire truck and no ambulances. None of the seven crew members survived the crash.

Among the passengers were about sixty secondary school students from Loyola Jesuit College in Abuja.

Out of the 60 teenagers from the school, 59 were killed, with Kechi Okwuchi being the only survivor from her school.

Kechi Okwuchi was one of two survivors of the plane crash that killed 107 passengers in 2002.

Kechi graduated with a First Class degree from the University of Thomas Houston, Texas 2015.

Apart from being inducted into six academic honour societies, she was the most outstanding student for her major in Economics and has already been accepted into graduate school for her MBA.
