18 killed as hoodlums attack Imo communities

Hoodlums have killed 18 people in coordinated attacks across several communities in the Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State.

The killings, which occurred on Sunday, took place in the communities of Umukabia, Eziawa, Ihitte Nasa, Umuhu, Amaoku, and Amaebe, leaving victims with deep machete wounds. The incidents have sparked fear and outrage among locals.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the tragedy followed the annual masquerade festival celebrated in Umuhu, Amaoku, Amaebe, and neighboring communities.

It was gathered that after the festivities, some locals, including holiday returnees, gathered at a drinking joint to continue their celebration.

Later, passers-by discovered nine people, including customers and attendants, lying in pools of blood at the joint, all with machete wounds.

A source, who pleaded anonymity, said all nine individuals were found dead, with deep machete cuts on their bodies.

The source added that three corpses were discovered in Umukabia, all from the same family. Additionally, five corpses were found in Eziawa village and another five in Ihitte Nasa, all with similar machete injuries on the same day.

The source further alleged that the killings might have involved internal collaborators, including “Orsu boys” believed to be members of IPOB and ESN.

According to the source, Orsu has endured years of IPOB and ESN dominance, which had driven residents away. However, recent military operations have reclaimed parts of the area, allowing gradual resettlement.

When contacted, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed the killings and stated that investigations are underway.

Okoye assured that the police are aware of the incidents and that the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has set up a high-powered security team involving different security agencies to unravel the case.

The CP also appealed for calm among the people.
