At least 1,376,391 candidates have registered to sit the ongoing 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal, which is being conducted nationwide by the National Examinations Council (NECO).

The Registrar/Chief Executive of NECO, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, made this known on Wednesday after monitoring the examination at some centres in Enugu, Enugu State.

The 2024 NECO SSCE commenced on June 19 and would end on July 25, 2024.

The examination body would examine candidates participating in the exercise in 76 subjects.

Acting Director, Information and Digital Communication, NECO, Azeez Sani, said in a statement on Wednesday that Prof. Wushishi expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination in the centre, noting that reports received from across the nation indicated that the examination is going on smoothly.

Wushishi attributed this success to the various measures put in place to ensure a seamless exercise.

According to him, the menace of examination malpractice is on the decline because of some innovations put in place by the Council to check irregularities.

The registrar admonished candidates to work hard in order to get a good grade in the examination, stressing that “there is no shortcut to success.”

He disclosed that since the commencement of the examination, he had monitored the exercise in Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Abia, Imo, and Anambra States to have first-hand information on the conduct of the examination.

According to him, in all the states visited, the critical stakeholders applauded NECO for the various measures put in place, which helped make the conduct of the 2024 SSCE seamless.

The registrar disclosed that the examination is also being held in Togo, Benin Republic, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Niger Republic, Cote d’Ivoire, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Prof. Wushishi explained that the extension of NECO examinations to other countries indicates the wide acceptance of NECO certificates across the world.
