124 suspected rapists arrested in Kano

Police Custody

THE Kano State Police Command has said that no fewer than 124 suspected rapists were arrested from April to June in the state.

Confirming this on Wednesday was the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Magaji Musa Majia, while parading the suspects before journalists at the police headquarters.

The PPRO revealed that the police recorded 115 cases of rape, sodomy and other acts of indecency within the period under review.

According to him, 128 victims were involved in the crimes, out of which 124 suspects had been arrested, 94 cases charged to courts, while 13 cases were still under investigation.

He expressed worry over the increasing rate of such crimes across the state, assuring that the police would continue to do their best to curtail the situation.

DSP Majia appealed to religious leaders, traditional rulers and other well-meaning Nigerians to join hands in fighting the social vices.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall, which brought about flooding, wreaked havoc, on Tuesday, in Gwarzo, which is about 100 kilometres to the capital city, Kano.

While sympathising with the victims who lost valuables worth millions of naira to the flooding on Wednesday, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, expressed shock over the disaster.

The commissioner assured the victims of government’s support in alleviating their sufferings in order to return to their normal lives.

Dr Getso also pledged government’s commitment to liaise with the ministry of environment as specialists in that direction to find out the cause of the flooding, which happens yearly in the area, with a view of finding a lasting solution.
