Twelve students of the University of Ilorin have been awarded scholarships among a total of 20 student beneficiaries selected from the nation’s public tertiary institutions.
Speaking at the third scholarship awards to students of public tertiary institutions by the Mojirola Educational Foundation in Ilorin, the Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), said that Unilorin and its students had continued to attract goodwill in its 50 years of existence by upholding its banner of high records without stain.
The VC, who spoke through the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Alex Akanni, also appreciated the educational foundation especially on granting over 50 per cent of the scholarship slots to Unilorin.
He charged the benefiting students to take the grant as a seed, do their best and put back into the system for others to benefit.
Speaking on the essence of the scholarship award by the CEO of Mojirola Educational Foundation, Engineer Joseph Duntoye, an Alumnus of the University of Ilorin (Faculty of Engineering), the Project Director, Dr. Ruth Abiola Adimula, who is an associate Professor at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS) Unilorin, said the main objective of the Foundation is to assist academically brilliant students of Kwara State origin, who are from underprivileged family.
“This would help to cushion the effect of school fees and basic educational needs”, she said.
“The management of Mojirola saw that the need was enormous in the society with the increase in tuition fees, therefore, beneficiaries were increased to 20 students with the amount of N200,000.00 each to Mojirola Scholars this year.
“It is a co-educational scholarship for boys and girls of both Christians and Muslims. All awardees are from public institutions. This year, we had over 200 applicants, who were screened to ensure good academic performance and family backgrounds, to ascertain the level of needs among others.
“Top 20 applicants that met all the conditions were granted as follows:
12 awardees are from University of Ilorin
3 awardees from Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto
1 Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi
1 Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
1 Bayero University Kano
1 University of Jos
1 Federal University of Technology, Minna”.
The educational foundation called on other well meaning Nigerians to support the government and the society by using their resources to support education in the country.
“The government cannot serve everyone and there are lots of the youth who need support to go through education and several others need employment after education. Therefore we appeal to individuals, corporate bodies and organizations to make sponsorship of education and provision of jobs for our youths priorities. This will reduce the number of our intelligent and outstanding youth who “JAPA” to developed countries.
“Unfortunately in recent times, we are losing these youth not only to develop other nations but also to the cold hands of physical deaths and uselessness because of shame to return home”.
In appreciation, a recipient who spoke on behalf of others, Mr. Emmanuel Olalajulo, a 400Level student of Medicine and Surgery Unilorin with a CGPA of 4.94, thanked the Mojirola Educational Foundation and urged other recipients to optimise the scholarship.
