No fewer than 10,000 students from private schools have applied for transfer to public primary and secondary schools in Lagos State.
This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mr Adesina Odeyemi, in the conference room of the ministry during an interaction with some parents and students, on Monday.
According to Adesina, it would be difficult for the state government to absorb that number given the limited materials and facilities in the existing public schools.
A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, in the ministry, Adesegun Ogundeji, said the requests were received for this session alone.
“Over 10,000 applications were received for transfer to public schools in the state in this academic session.”
The statement further appealed to the parents to “bear with the government’s inability to effect the transfer,” adding that “the state government has embarked on massive renovations of structures, that can accommodate more students.
“Until all renovation and reconstruction is completed in schools to make conducive learning environment achievable, the government would not be able to accommodate more students into any of its schools,” the statement said.
